    No, thats not right. There is no way my 3mbps connection is turning out to be 9mbps just because I have 3 computers connected. I know for a fact if I go download on my other computer, it WILL slow down my connection. May not be noticeable in my surfing, but if I test my connection, it will show a slow down. I am paying for a 3mbps line into my house, not 9mbps. I don't know how else I can explain it. It is not limited by me, but rather by the cable company. A router is simply a bridge that creates a private network. A hub gives EACH device its own PUBLIC IP address, it JUST splits, doesn't route. I need someone else to post up. If you have a 10/100 switch, each port will get whatever the network card on the other end allows, but the ENTIRE network will ONLY get what connection you subscribed too.

    At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

      Hubs are not intelligent either. They just broadcast the packets across the entire network.

      hub < switch

              Router > Switch > Hub

              Maybe im just not explaining it good enough. I 100% agree with you.

              Enough of this battle 🙂

                The router in your house has a switch built in. A router is more or less a bridge, but with advanced features.

                  Switch = Multiport Bridge

                  Router = Advanced Switch

                    Angel is trying to say that if you take 24 mbps into a 4 port hub, the max of each port is only 6 mps, regardless of whats running off the other slots. a router will only deliver is to what is using the connection... Either way I don't think thats Mike's problem. No idea what it is to tell you the truth. Just use a different wireless connection, like a neighbors, if you can.

                                Quoted from Webopedia:

                                "When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets."

                                AKA what i was describing

                                  Yeah, how does that equal the connection being divided?

                                  Ok, enough whoring this thread. Either you need to learn how to explain what you are saying or you really need to go back to school. 🙂

                                          You need to implement some QoS (Quality-of-Service) rules using your router. Most modern routers have this functionality accessible via their Administration interface. Specifically the very very common Linksys WRT54G allows QoS rules based on device. Using this you can place your own machine on high priority and the Xbox on low. Will do what you want.
