an SRT-4 gets my vote...those things havn't really held their value at all. Some 2005's with less than 20k are selling under $15...there's a fully modded stage 3 one on srtforums for $15,500...and this is pretty much with everything minus a built shortbock (it has a aftermarket head, etc.)...

I know you wanna buy from a dealer...but that^^^ is my .02 anyway.

i am shopping as well. for the most part i am looking at GM cars, but the list is open as i have not decisively decided anything yet.
97-03 gran prix. preferably the GTP at minimum it will have the 3800 in it. nothing less than that.
97-2000 (i think those years are correct) regal GS as it has the same drivetrain as the GP GTP
95+ Monte not sure on 2000+ due to money but i do like the newer bodystyle better then the old. again it will have the 3800 in it
chrysler 300M finding alot of higher mile cars. so this must mean people like them and drive them alot.
SRT4 but likely out of my price range

suby but likely out of my price range. even though it does not have to be a WRX. not a suby buff but the one it stems from would be ok. i think that is the impreza.
have considered VW's but not sure what it would be.

but my heart really is with the GP GTP. so that is what i am spending the most time looking at.

if you have a wife or kids you care about, visit http://iihs.org and look at the technical data about the # of cm of chassis deformation on front and side hits, dummy-impact measurements, etc.

Some cars are surprisingly unsafe. From what you listed, the A4 would be my pick based on its blend of nice interior, nice styling, excellent safety (especially 2002 and newer), and good aftermarket support. Great daily driver.

The SRT-4 comes to mind as "surprisingly unsafe". The neon platform as of a few years ago was a f@#king deathtrap. It crumpled like a can in testing. Newer cars are always better than older ones, and an SRT-4 may be on a new-enough chassis to be ok, but look at the data in detail for the specific year you're thinking of.. even very well made cars like BMW are significantly safer today than just a few years ago (the E90 3 series (introduced in 05) is much better than the E46 3 series (introduced in 1999).

Definitely go AWD though.. and get "real" AWD like on an A4 or a subaru. The mazda 3, Jetta, etc are FWD until the fronts spin (haldex). Audi and Subaru have fantastic mechanical AWD systems that are the real-deal.
