Amp died

Amps CAN die randomly, but usually don't. Next, why would you go to Best Buy to have an amp you already own installed? Go to places that specialize in this stuff like:

Tintmasters
Site On Sound
Team Electronics
Audio Garage
Trafik Jamz

Odds are any of the above places could identify the problem and either fix it themselves or arrange to have the product replaced/repaired.

i didnt have a wiring kit for an amp in my car yet and my dad want to get it installed for me so it was a b-day present so i didnt really have a choice of where it got installed, but if it was up to me would not have gone there.

How old is the Amp? What brand? It could be something wrong with your amp kit as well. Amps can die but very unlikely to happen

odds are best buy fucked it up...thats not uncommon at all. I've yet to see a car they did in install in that they didnt break some kind of interior piece or screw something up.

There have been a few instances where the fuse that comes with the power wire is defective from the start. I would replace the fuse (even if it looks good, just spend the $3) in the fuse holder under the hood and see if that helps. I have other suggestions, but before I get to them let me ask you this... does the amp turn on (power light comes on)? Does the amp ever go into 'protection'? How old are the subs? Answer those and we can try a few different things. I'd start with a new fuse up front (again if it looks ok, that doesn't mean anything...It appears the fuse makers are sucking as of lately)...

It is a phoenix gold subs and amp, never had any probablems with the amp or subs before this. both subs and amp are about 1 1/2 to 2 years old. i have not had time to even mess around with the amp and see if any lights come on. The one thing i dont get is how they said they couldnt get any amp to work(i guess they tried a couple different amps and subs) and then they say that my amp is dead and that was the problem.

Well being they tried other amps and it didn't work, then there is more than likely issues elsewhere.

Fuse for power wire
Fix: Replace fuse
Short inside box with speaker wiring (pos & neg touching)
Fix: Remove woofers and make sure all connections are good on terminal cup, and terminals on woofer...make sure no strands of wires are touching
Short outside box at terminal or amp (pos & neg touching)
Fix: Check terminal cup and amplifier to see if any pos and neg wires are touching
Remote amp turn on wire (blue) not functioning
Fix: Test for power on this wire with a multimeter, if no power, remove deck and check connection. If connection is good, you will have to pull switched power from an ignition source.
Poor ground
Fix: Make sure the ground is in a solid piece of metal that is stripped to its bare metal (paint/sealant/etc.. is removed)
Bad RCA's
Fix: Try new RCA's
Short in voicecoil of woofers
Fix: Ohm out each voicecoil of woofer at terminal cup.
Short in amplifier
Fix: Replace

Without seeing the amp/vehicle, that is the best I can suggest.

subs are good, i would assume the RCA's are good cause they are new but i will just have to try hooking my amp up because they said they did get other amps to work after awhile. thanks for the info/help.

I'm willing to put money on one of the solutions that Jason posed being the problem. I'm 99% sure its not the amps since they couldn't get other amps to work either.

Which model PG amp is it? I have a few contacts at PG and can at least get you set up for a repair in the off chance that it is the amp.

they told me the amp did not work but the amp did work the last time i used it. also it was a pheonix gold octane amp i think.

and i think my first question was indeed relevant to solving the problem... if the original amp didn't work and all they did was put in a new amp and it worked then it would eliminate many of these suggestions... like the fuse/ground/RCAs and so on

I'll give you that, but nothing you asked would have helped beyond what Jason (FG2) already suggested, so, while "legit", it was redundant as it was posted in the original post already that the amp worked before (last summer) and that then was the last time the amp was used.
