I have a '65 mustang with a 4.7 L 289 that is having some issues. Meaning, it completely lost its balls. I have taken it to at least 3 different mechanics in fargo and it has not gotten any better. Ford helped a little bit, but I still have trouble getting to 65MPH or breaking the rear end loose at all.

Does anyone know a good place to take it who would know about classic V8s? It isn't really that modified, just has a new cooling system, headers, shelby style side exit exhaust, an edelbrock hi-rise intake manifold, and a holley 650 carb, if that helps at all. I'm kind of sick of not being able to drive it how I want to.

not using points, I am not sure about the carb work because it has been in and out of shops, but I kind of doubt it. The carb works well enough to drive it and that's about it. I also doubt that the valves have been adjusted, but I don't have any idea. I'm just running 87 pump gas and running seafoam through it every once in a while.

Other problems that came to mind- mild leak between the water pump and thermostat and the black. I also usually go through at least one starter solenoid a summer.

I've played with some carbed mustangs before. Dont you think a 650 is kinda big for that set up?

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall
Torque is how far you take the wall with you

Thats your problem, but really I think your running her a little rich.

I know it's a small engine, but it has gotten significantly worse. I just wanted it back to normal.

And yes. I am sure that the 650 is a bit big. But that was what I installed when I was 16, so that is what I have to work with.

Ruthless351, If you have the time, I would greatly appreciate if you took a look at it. If that is the problem, tuning would save me a lot of money and time. Or if you know a place to take it to get tuned, that would work as well.

Check the compression and turn down the fuel a little bit

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

If its still intact (all original) internally, theres a good chance that the unleaded low octane fuel has done a number on your valve seats. They are soft and get beat to shit with the hot temps todays low octane creates in your combustion chamber. That "could" explain the loss of power over time. Worn camshaft could as well. It would be interesting to see your set up to determine your issue.
