I got a electric furnace to heat my garage. After staring at it for a half hour I figured out how to hook it up but got a few questions still. First what size wiring should I run to it? I used copper 8/3 to test it and not sure if that's correct, as it looks like it was previously hooked up with aluminum 6/3 in the house it was in. And what size breaker should I use? It pops my 30 amp double pull after about 2 mins, bout the time the coils start really heating up. Should I be running a 40 or 50 amp double pull breaker?

Any help would be awesome. Trying my make my garage a little more comfortable to work in.

What is the rating on the unit for watts or amps? It should say what the max size breaker is.

            Hire an electrician.

If you do the wiring you have to have it inspected anyways otherwise its illegal...so just hire someone.

Yeah your right there is probly no wiring regulations and codes what so ever. Infact, rewire your house while your at it.

He certainly could re-wire the house doing the work himself. There are standards and codes (NEC) that apply but a homeowner can do his own electrical work.

I believe to do it properly though, he would need to have it inspected before he connected power...but yeah, I fully plan to wire my entire basement by myself.

exactly, just save the time and have someone do it right the first time and meet code.

Where did I say no codes????? My wife and I wired my whole house when we built new in Fargo. The only thing we didn't do is the service entrance cable from meter to panel. I did all the plumbing myself too. Am I licensed in ND for either?? No.

its not illegal if its your own house, but it is illegal if you dont pull a permit and have it inspected.

it would be retarded to not have certified wiring. If there was ever a fire or something to that nature your insurance would to you to go fuck yourself.

no they wouldnt, thats why you have it inspected by the city... the same guy that inspects certified electricians.

i build and wire house. house is inspected/passed. ten years later house burns down. insurance says it was cause i wired it even though it was fine for ten years and passed an inspection. your right, that does make sense. :icon_scratch:

what if you buy a house that was wired by someone other then a certified electrician? are you screwed because you didnt have it rewired? will no insurance company pick you up? oh noes. im glad your not charge of the world.
