I think usually you have to pay to get the back up disc...I paid $10 I think for XP on my Dell years ago. Maybe that option doesnt exist anymore.

Usually you burn your own recovery discs after you first turn on the computer...

You need the recovery discs to access the system repair tools to fix Windows Boot Manager (bootmgr).

                http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form

You can order the recovery media from that link. You will have to wait for the discs which doesn't really do you any good right now.

To get your machine back up and running now, go here: http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/

Download the applicable flavor of recovery disc and burn it. Then go here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fixing-bootmgr-is-missing-error-while-trying-to-boot-windows-vista/

Follow those instructions and that should take care of your problem. Hope that helps. :icon_salut:

thanks CMK. I was trying to find somewhere to download a GOOD recovery/fix file but it was kind of time consuming/not going so well searching on my phone. I'll give that a shot after work tonight.

The links that I posted will be easy. It is a piece of cake. Let me know if you need any more help with it.

In my experience, the only solution is to archive your important data and then reinstall. The "bootmgr missing" problem can't be fixed with the recovery console (at least, the one I experienced).

+1 for installing the OS in a separate partition with important programs and data in another

It should be as simple as throwing in the disc and doing a copy 'path on disc' 'path on drive' in the console. At least that solved a similar problem I ran into on a client's machine a while back.

If CMK's links don't fix it and all you need is that one file, I can email you a copy of it.

I'll do some looking on my ntfs partition to see where the boot.ini is located, but I seem to recall not finding it anywhere. How that could happen is outside my scope of realistic expectations.

boot.ini is not relevant on modern NT machines. A clean Win7 install doesn't have one anywhere.

By "modern NT machines", I assume you mean everything after XP? I don't know about Vista, but I know where boot.ini is in XP and how to modify it.

Windows Vista, 2008 and 7 use a different boot loader than XP. None of the "solutions" proposed by others in this thread would have worked on the problem that darkelvis was having.
