OK so now my girlfriends car, which we are currently trying to sell, is overheating. It just started doing this today. The coolant level is good and doesn't show any signs of oil contamination, and the oil smells like oil, not burnt coolant, so i don't think the headgasket went. I am thinking maybe the water pump has stopped working, which will require a timing job pretty much to fix. Is there anything else maybe simpler I could check for? any help is appreciated. Is there any way to tell if the water pump is bad other that just taking it off and replacing it? thanks. yeesh, hopefully this won't take long so I can get the dsm running before too long.

if it is the 3.1L v-6 look at the intake gasket. it went out on my grand prix and the people at sellands said that that is extremely common on all versions of this motor and usually happens around 100k miles. they quoted me $600. it would over heat just everyonce and a while and then on a cool day it would overheat extremly fast

      PM me for:
      Sandblasting(I use glass beads)
      Diesel repairs or performance products.

If your water pump was bad it would be leaking out of the weep hole
        Is your thermostat opening
white smoke out of the exhaust
You could pressure test the cooling system
        air in the system
just some suggestions and things to look for

Ya, there are way too many things you need to look for in the cooling system, you have to eliminate all of them when you deal with an overheating issue. Just do it quickly before you ruin the head.

Does it overheat only when sitting still or even on the hwy? If it only overheats while sitting still it could just be the fan.

until you fix the fan, you could run the heat at full blast 😛

it could also be the fact that you claim to have an 81 eclipse. but then again, what do i know? 😛
