My thought process was that the added ethanol would have magical anti-knock properties, but maybe 91 is 91 regardless of makeup...

It might(and sometimes, the ethanol IS the reason it is 91..aka not worth it IMO), BUT, it also has less specific energy and less energy density.

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

I go to Fleet Farm for two reasons: First, their mid-grade and premium do NOT have ethanol (stock cars, best fuel mileage). Second, they are among the cheapest in town, most often times the same price as Loves and Flying J...Speaking of which, I will NEVER go back to Loves after getting a bad tank last summer. My stock Saturn wouldn't even run on the junk, literally my car would top out @ 25mph until I filled it up with different gas and it would start hard on it.

Same reason I go to sams club. Their 87 in ethanol free. I've got around 3-4 MPGs more running pure gas vs stuff laced with ethanol. But the only other option they offer is 89 with 10% ethanol for maybe 3 cents less. But with the membership its either the cheapest or not worth the time and gas to find someone 2 cents less.

I think your logic of building the tune then testing it on other brands should work for what you want. It might not be a scientific test but if all your going to do is use it when you can't find ethanol it doesn't have to be perfect.

I just sent logs from the 5th tune revision, should be pretty soon. :icon_bounce:

FWIW, I picked up 5 gallons of E85 at Petro Serve by I29 on Main today. Looks like 80% ethanol content according to my tester. I'll probably check a few more spots around town as I go.

                  Petro Serve/Tesoro on 2nd St: 70% ethanol
                  Bjornson's on University: 82% ethanol

WHat is your tester? I'd like to go test some of the 87 with up to 10% ethanol to see who has the least content so my turd box can get top mileage.

BTW If you havn't noticed sams club is now 10% ethanol 87 and 10% ethanol 91.

Nothing fancy, I use a Quick Fuel Technology Echecker, not really intended to test E10...

wow thats pretty cheap. I see what your saying though, I will pick one up if I have a car that runs E-85 ever.

Here's what I had found before I bought the Echecker, it may help. Unfortunately, you'll have to math 😞

Tested the e85 blend from the Petro Serve on 45th St and 9th Ave SW, 74% ethanol.

O how I wish I were a cemistry major and i could do this in the lab with some spare time.

Come to think about it your getting a lot or low ratings on your E-85 so I would assume the same for 10%. Though maybe there dumping more in to save cost and its really like 15% as thats what its going to jump up to in the future.

testing E85 is pretty much a worthless endeavor.
Read the SAE papers on it, there is virtually no difference in knock capability and power of E fuels from 50-85%. In fact you need to be OVER 85% to make any measureable difference with E98 only being marginally better than E85. Ive been using E85 for 7 years, and have never tested it once, never had any issues, and even ran the same tune on e85 and e50 with a VERY minor fueling adjustment, about 2%. In short its a GIANT waste of time

Also E10 is certifiable up to 15% ethanol content with alot of it being 13-14% as an average

I disagree, I've seen pretty large swings in my fuel trims switching blends. You could easily damage an engine switching from E70 to E85 and running lean before the trims sort it out. I make sure to stay in closed loop for a day or two before I run it hard.

Sorry dude but if you are pretty obsessed with your "tune", if your that close to the ragged edge you might want to back it off a tad. I run open loop speed density and never see more than .2 AFR difference ever. If the car runs drive it and dont waste so much time obsessing about tuning
