    I did that once and it blew the main fuse under the hood(on mine at least), it may have done the same but not burned quite all the way through, fuses can do that from time to time. When in doubt, check the fuses first.

      Unlike most import vehicles, Gm doesn't have a "main" fuse per say. Nor does it have an alternator fuse. It may be the battery. Do this, jump start it and disconnect the negative terminal. If it dies, replace your alternator. If not, replace the battery.

        I'd check your main grounding points to see if any are loose/corroded

            If the alternator tests good check your ground cable conections and clean them up and make sure all your battery cables are in good shape an there's no corrosion everywhere...I had a prelude one time that had a new alternator in it, turns out it was just the ground cable was corroded where it connects to the frame...

                      just guessing the fusible link on the power wire to the starter from the altenator? thats where I would have started.
